You still run around lost in the woods at night, searching for eight missing pages while the Slender Man hunts you in the dark. Only now you know why you’re alone in the woods at all. You play as Lauren, who arrives at her friend Kate’s house to find her gone, a trail of horror in her absence. Kate has become obsessed with a tall, thin figure that seems to stalk her. She’s drawn his image on the walls and littered her room with notebook pages describing her extreme fear. She begs you to help her. If you’ve played The Eight Pages before as I have, then this opening prologue is peaceful in its own strange way.

Looking through the house for clues is reminiscent of another indie game,. When you begin, you get to run through a forest where dwindling daylight is shining through autumn trees. It’s beautiful. But the sun sets fast, and it’s not long after exploring Kate’s house that things start to go horribly wrong. I remember The Eight Pages being scary, but The Arrival’s second chapter (also called “The Eight Pages,” as it’s a redesigned version of the same level) is much worse. I play a lot of horror games, but the Slender Man got under my skin like no other monster has. Seeing him standing atop a hill—the outline of a man, small yet impossibly large given the distance—made me shiver.

But hearing the thoom of his footsteps as he hunted me and seeing his alabaster white face appear in the darkness frightened me beyond reason. I’m creeping myself out just writing this. The Slender Man even diverts you from your path until you go in circles, hopelessly lost. You can’t look at him without losing your grip on reality, and each time he appears in front of you (or to the side), you have to turn and run a different way to stay sane. Lingering near him makes your screen distort and glitch, impairing your sight. After playing that chapter, I had a hard time sleeping. I went to bed looking over my shoulder and woke up still unnerved. It’s not that the Slender Man is more special than other monsters.

Him catching me wasn’t scary. It was seeing him over and over again, in the corner of my vision or suddenly two feet away.

It was the prolonged and heightened state of dread and stress I endured—of losing my bearings and always having to escape, yet not knowing where that final page was—that did me in. This, coming from someone who can’t get enough of horror stories. Yet across all its chapters, The Arrival gets on your nerves more than it disturbs you. If you get lucky and find all the pages quickly, then the Slender Man doesn’t have a lot of time to scare you.

Looking around aimlessly for the pages is frustrating and boring, and that makes dealing with the Slender Man a nuisance—an obstacle in the way of your goal. The subsequent chapter (“Into the Abyss”) is worse, repeating what The Eight Pages did and then adding another annoyance on top of it. But you’re basically just running around trying to find things, for however long it takes. That’s not a concept strong enough to support a whole game, which explains why The Arrival only takes a few hours to complete.

I have to give credit to developer Blue Isle, though. I didn’t expect much from the later chapters, and a couple of them were pretty cool. My favorite one took place on a farm, where you discover charred remains of buildings, grasses too tall and thick for comfort, an unholy chapel, and a cellar where the lights blink on and off for painfully long seconds at a time. I wanted to learn more about what happened to Kate. About how she got into this mess, and how she planned to get out.

The Arrival left me with a lot of unanswered questions. They didn’t deepen the mystery for me. They only made me wish I had spent my time playing another game. The Slender Man, though.
