George Mason University Percussion Ensemble, John Kilkenny, Director John Kilkenny enjoys a multi-faceted career that includes work as a performer, conductor, educator, and arts administrator. Currently, Kilkenny is Director of Percussion Studies and Conductor of the Symphonic Winds at George Mason University.

Under his direction, the group has toured the Pacific Northwest to perform at the Western International Band Conference and enjoyed featured appearances at the Virginia Music Educators Conference, College Music Society, Mid-Atlantic Conference, and John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The Mason Percussion Group completed a tour of Costa Rica. Kilkenny has performed with the Washington National Opera, National Symphony Orchestra, 21st Century Consort, Verge Ensemble, and appeared regularly as a soloist and chamber music performer across the United States. He has also served as Artist in Residence at the Sewanee Summer Music Festival and clinician for the Music for All National Percussion Festival. Kilkenny received his bachelor’s degree from The Juilliard School and his master’s degree from Temple University.

Principal Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year at Post Oak Middle School. I am excited to be joining the POMS Patriot community as principal for this outstanding school and community!! Prior to joining the Post Oak Middle School Team, I served as principal of Ni River Middle School.

I also served as a principal and assistant principal in Caroline County, Virginia and taught for nine years in Stafford County, Virginia. I earned my Bachelor’s Degree from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Master’s Degree from the University of Mary Washington and completed coursework as a newly appointed administrator at Virginia Tech.

My wife is in education and two of my three children are Spotsylvania County Public School students. Our mission here at Post Oak School is to equip all of our Patriots with the essential 21 st Century Skills to prepare them for a smooth transition to high school and to be successful in their future endeavors.

Students will be challenged daily and engaged with hands-on learning that is differentiated to meet their individual learning needs. Post Oak Middle offers students engaging learning experiences such as; Chrome Book Classrooms, Flipped Classrooms, Makerspace Classroom, World Languages, Career and Technical Education opportunities, Fine Arts, and a competitive athletic program. Students are encouraged to be active learners and leaders inside and outside of the classroom. A successful school community requires communication and collaboration amongst students, teachers, staff, and parents. I encourage all parents to be actively involved here at Post Oak Middle School. The Career Switcher Program was created by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to provide an alternative pathway. I grew up on a dairy farm in the small agricultural community near Kalida, Ohio. After graduating from the College of Wooster with a Biology degree, I began teaching middle school science.

I obtained my teaching license through the Spotsylvania County Schools Career Switcher Program and completed my Masters in Educational Leadership through Mary Washington University. For Spotsylvania County Schools, I’ve had the privilege to teach Middle School Math and Science as well as some History. I was an Administrative Intern for a year and I filled in for Assistant Principals at Post Oak, Battlefield, Thornburg, and Freedom Middle Schools for various lengths of time. I also spent 2 years facilitating the Summer Enrichment program and 2 years as Spotswood Elementary Assistant Principal.
