Steven uses his quick wit to outsmart them, but will his mum be happy? A great book to read to children in the foundation stage or key stage one.

It can be used to create role plays, and as a starting point for children learning about instructions. The illustrations are eye catching and follow the simple text perfectly, which makes the story easy to understand whatever the reading level of the child. This is a story about a young boy who is asked to go to the shop by his mother to collect a list of items including, among others, crisps, apples and doughnuts. The boy goes to the shop and picks up everything he has been asked to find but on the way back to his house he comes across a number of unfriendly characters who attempt to take away all of the boys food. The young boy is clever, however, and comes up with methods to make the characters leave him alone.

The young boy is clever, however, and comes up with methods to make the characters leave him alone. One of example of this is making a pig get stuck in a fence whilst trying to get a doughnut.

After a number of these encounters the child makes it back to his house and is able to give his mum the shopping where he is told that he did not get everything he was asked for. I like this book for the reason that the illustrations play a part in telling the story, for example rather than saying that the pig got stuck in the fence, Burningham chose to show this using an illustration. This would make the book possible stimuli for a lesson where the objective was to write a sentence to accompany the picture. On the other hand, one aspect of this book that I thought could have been improved upon was the ending. The end of the story is quite abrupt and sometimes feels as if the book didn’t really finish.

This may be somewhat confusing for the children and so the teacher could simply add a sentence about how the young boy wondered what he would have for his tea now. I believe this would round the book of more fluently. I believe this book would be appropriate for children from an age of 5 and up. This is because the teacher can use it to focus on the aspect of find 1 less in numeracy lessons. This is a key lesson with early years and this book could be a good resource to use as introduction to the lesson. Confronted by a menacing monkey, a burly bear and a petulant pig, Steven has to outwit them all. Arriving home a little later than his mother expected and with a slightly lighter shopping basket. This story has a very simple concept, it has a gentle repetitive narrative which allows the story to build itself in stages. The animals that Steven meets are very brash and rude which some children may be able to relate to with regards to playground taunting. With this in mind, Steven uses the attributes of the animals against themselves.

With the pig being stuck in the fence for being too fat and the monkey making too much noise which wakes the nasty dog. By turning the situation around, Steven is able to walk away.

John Burningham's 'The Shopping Basket' is a great book for cross curricular lessons in EYFS and KS1. The method of subtraction can be introduced to children using the food in the book. Furthermore, all the food listed in the story can be used for a taste lesson where the children can decide which of the foods they liked of disliked (with parental consent given). This book can also be an introduction into instruction writing, where children can write out their own shopping lists. ‘The Shopping Basket’ by John Burningham is fantastic children's story time book. I think this is an excellent cross curriculum book ideal for Key Stages 1 - 2. It can be linked to literacy and is particularly useful for work on lists. The children can discuss Steven's shopping list in relation to their own shopping lists that they may have been working on. The book also has an element of numeracy within it, as each animal takes one specific item from his shopping, and so the children can be encouraged to count (subtract) how many items are left with the use of the illustrated pictures.

This is a a really fun book with great illustrations.I like how on each page it shows how many items of shopping Steven has left. This is great for developing children's counting skills, and subtraction. I intend to plan some EYFS activities around this book, such as counting/subtraction, making shopping lists, identifying colours of fruits/tasting fruits. The children thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and the anticipations of what will happen next kept all the pupils eager to read on. This book is also a good resource to introduce subtraction to the young children. I didn't enjoy this book. I don't understand why the animals were so aggressive towards Steven, and why he was so horrible to them back.

I don't think this sends a good message to EYFS children about sharing and being kind and friendly. It is quite an old book, and I know some adults who find it hilarious, but personally I didn't enjoy it at all. It is fun to read, and just repetitive enough for children to get involved in the refrains without being at all boring. I love the encounters with the animals, and the put-downs that the boy uses to outwit them are all very funny, especially for children who love the fact that he can be so rude to these naughty animals. The book is great for EYFS, and would be good for KS1 still learning to read.

This is great to read at story time. There are great opportunities to think about what happens next, and when children have read it before they can have fun remembering which animal comes next. The repeated refrains are great to get children joining in and enjoying the book. There is a lot of maths hidden in the book as well, with possibility for lots of counting and thinking about one less. The items in Stevens shopping basket – six eggs, five bananas, four apples, three oranges, two doughnuts and a packet of crisps – would be ideal for a counting task in mathematics. The list could also be used for working on addition and subtraction.

The contents of the list could be brought into the classroom which would really bring maths teaching to life. Additionally, the book contains a lot of repetitive language which helps to improve the reading skills of children. Read aloud to a class, the story can generate lots of discussion.

This book lends itself brilliantly to story mapping, as the geography of where Steven lives is prevalent to the narrative (Steven must leave a note at no.
